What they built

Starter Story publishes interviews with founders about how they actually started and grew their businesses, with real revenue numbers attached. Over the years it grew from a blog into a media and membership business: a huge library of case studies, a large newsletter, a paid community, and now AI-powered tools that help members find and validate ideas. Pat Walls (@thepatwalls) started it as a side project and turned it into his full-time company.

How they did it

Walls had tried other ideas and, by his own account, kept overlooking the one in front of him. When he finally committed to Starter Story, he did three concrete things: pushed hard on distribution, monetized the audience better, and made his first real hire. Revenue nearly doubled after that shift. The content itself is the marketing loop. Founder stories rank in search and get shared, which grows the audience, which grows the newsletter and paid membership. He kept the whole thing bootstrapped and profitable rather than raising money.
