What they built

Chatbase started as ChatGPT for your own documents. You upload your content, and it builds a custom chatbot that answers questions using only that data. Yasser Elsaid, then a college student, shipped it in the first weeks after ChatGPT's public launch and tweeted it to his 16 followers. The post went viral. Chatbase has since grown into a platform where companies build customer-facing AI agents that plug into CRMs, payment systems and scheduling tools to resolve support tickets end to end.

How they did it

Yasser was an AI first mover. He read the demand the moment the technology arrived and shipped a useful wrapper before anyone else made it easy. Most of the money comes from higher tiers where businesses use the API and advanced features, not the entry plan. He stayed bootstrapped on purpose, and his own contrarian take is that the biggest mistake bootstrapped founders make is acting like one, meaning they underspend and undership when they could be pressing the advantage.

The numbers

Chatbase hit $64K MRR within six months of launch, crossed $3M ARR at the one-year mark, and by early 2026 Yasser posted the business at over $8M ARR, which works out to roughly $667K a month (source). ProductLed profiled the company reaching $8M ARR with a team of about 18 people and no venture funding (source). The monthly figure here is annual revenue divided by twelve, and the numbers are founder-reported, so treat them as claimed.

What to take from it: timing is a real edge. When a new capability lands, the first clean, useful product built on top of it can capture a market before incumbents wake up. Yasser did not invent the model. He wrapped it in the simplest thing people would pay for, then kept moving.
